Original or mod — which one do you need?
An original fileis the manufacturer's calibration, untouched: same maps, same limits, checksum intact. It is what you want when a module has to go back to exactly how it left the factory, when a flash has failed and left one in a bad state, or when you need a clean baseline to compare an edited file against.
A mod file has already been changed from that original. You are buying the finished file rather than a service — it downloads immediately and you can inspect it, compare it against the original and adapt it. What you do with a calibration, and whether it is permitted where you work, is yours to judge as the shop doing the work.
Both kinds are matched the same way: by number, not by model. Read the ECM code, part number or software version off the module and search for it — two trucks that look identical can take different calibrations. The guides show where to find that number on Cummins, CAT and Detroit modules.
